What Is Telomere Length?

How the Test Is Done

Telomere length is most often measured from a standard blood draw. The white blood cells in the sample are analyzed in a laboratory using techniques such as:

  • Quantitative PCR (qPCR) — measures relative telomere length via the T/S ratio.
  • Flow-FISH — uses fluorescent probes to measure telomere length in specific cell populations.
  • Southern blot (TRF analysis) — a more traditional method that estimates average telomere length in kilobases.

No special fasting is typically required, though you should follow the specific preparation instructions provided by your testing laboratory or clinician.
